The Culture Of Getting Stuff Done & Why You Should Go Your Own Way

Have a dream, set a goal, make a plan and HUSTLE. We are renowned as the generation of obsessive, busy bodies who propagate the culture of getting stuff done, pushing boundaries and moving so quickly we could probably give Usain Bolt a run for his money. Hell, whether you believe it or not... I can hear the faint chant of my high school principal, reciting to us every assembly how 'if we fail to prepare, we prepare to fail' and I guess to an extent, he did have a point.

But when do we stand up and say... this is too much? That we need to slow down and go our own way. Do we even know how to focus on what's important anymore? I mean... it's a bit like looking at our diary and trying to schedule in time for self-care, why are we trying to schedule something that we should already be doing. Stop feeling bad for taking the day off and laying in the bath until the cows come home, JUST DO IT - I'll be your Shia LaBeouf from here on out.

That being said; here are a few reasons - Why You Should Go Your Own Way:

#1 - LIFE IS NOT A RACE, IT'S A MARATHON

Oh how cliche it is of me to say that; life is not a race, it's a marathon - but it really is. We're so busy trying to be busy, burrowing our heads into our careers, relationships, health or in this industry 'the top', that we forget what being present actually feels like or how enjoyable it is to lay back in the sun, with a bev in one hand and a book in the other. I mean... when was the last time you took a personal day and just went for a drive or a walk or a swim. Your life is about the only thing you will ever be in control of, so you need to re-evaluate the fuck out of it and start going your own way.

#2 - TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE

Much like our 'life is not a race, it's a marathon' point - so is time. So why are we wasting it? I hope that you value your time as much as I value mine. In-fact the best way for me to explain this point, is to relay it back to my photography business - for example; I'll set a fee to cover my equipment, time, skill and effort when a client comes along looking for a studio session. I give her my fee and she tells me that this is too expensive, that she will have to look elsewhere. YOU LITERALLY PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET FOLKS and time if of the essence, so don't waste it by bending yourself backwards for people who don't give a flying hoot, we've got a business to run here. But this also applies to life - you have your own dreams, goals and plans to abide by, yes? Well now is your time, do it your own way and at your own pace.

#3 - YOU HAVE A PURPOSE

I like to believe that we as individuals, were plopped onto this thing called earth because we have a purpose - YOU have a purpose. You don't have to decide at sixteen years of age, what you want to do for the rest of your life, heavens you could study to become a nurse and decide at fifty-two that you want to become a pilot. Life is not a race, it's a marathon - time is of the essence - you have a purpose. I wish someone would have told me this when I was leaving school, because I was that girl - I studied Health and Social Care in college with the hopes of becoming an intensive care nurse and at twenty-one, made the unanimous decision that actually I wanted to be a photographer. Fast forward to April 2019 and here I am with a fully kitted home studio and a small base of regular clients, who actually want to come back for photographs time and time again.

This is your life, don't succumb to the rat race by trying to get stuff done, go your own way at your
own pace.

What will you be doing differently from here on out?

  4. Very nice post! I have been feeling more like this as a I get older. I keep wondering why I keep relying upon a mode of being that suggests the necessity of setting and reaching goals. I feel like I am upon a hamster wheel. Once I reach one goal, I replace it with another. It seems that we could all take a deep breath to contemplate the motivations behind our goal setting. How much of it is too appear impressive or compare favorably to our peers? And are there other modes of existence that could work better for us? Thank you so much for sharing. As you can see, you got me thinking.... :)

    1. Thank you Roger! It's funny you should say that, because this is EXACTLY how I've been feeling. We're an odd bunch us humans, always hungry for the next task or to-do. I love that I've given you something to think about, this made my day! x

  5. I really enjoyed this! I think we find out who we are as we grow. Our life experiences educate us and develop us and help us choose what it is we want to do with our lives. There’s so much pressure, but we need to remember to take care of ourselves while we focus too.

    1. I'm so pleased you liked my post Amy! I couldn't agree with you more, sometimes it's hard to remember that it's our decision as to what we do with our lives. I know I could be better at taking better care of myself though and I'm sure there are loads of people in the same boat x

  8. As I was reading this I was shouting "yaaaassss" in my head hahaha! It's so true that you don't need to get things done by certain imaginary milestones. I took three years out from education and started university at 20 instead of 18 like all my peers. I used to panic about being behind because all my friends are handing in their dissertations while I'm here just coming to the end of first year but it's the path I chose and I've got to accept that. This was such an interesting post and I'm so glad I read it xx

    1. Oh my goodness haha! I love that. It's hard to forget that life isn't a race, but you're so right. I never went to university at all and I used to feel like I was missing out, because everyone I knew did go, but it was honestly the best thing I ever did. If I would have went to uni, I don't think I'd have set up my photography business. You will be amazing at uni regardless of what age you start and like you said, this is your path. Thank you so much El, I'm so glad you liked it x
